Ironman

History was made in Nelson Mandela Bay on Sunday, 3rd April 2022, when South Africa claimed all three-podium spots in the men’s race at the ISUZU IRONMAN African Championship, and third place in the women’s race. Hometown favourite, Kyle Buckingham, clinched his second ISUZU IRONMAN African Championship title (2018 & 2022). Buckingham was closely followed by Brad Weiss and Matt Trautman who grabbed the second and third spots respectively, marking the first time ever South Africa has taken a clean sweep on the professional podium in the 44-year history of IRONMAN racing.

In the women’s race, Magda Nieuwoudt, from Pretoria claimed third place in the PRO women’s field while also claiming her first ever IRONMAN PRO podium position. This rounded off a historic moment with four of six PRO podium positions belonging to South Africans.

The ISUZU IRONMAN African Championship is a pinnacle event in Nelson Mandela Bay and to be able to host athletes from all over the globe in the new Boardwalk Mall was a special occasion. The assistance, friendly staff and magnificent new facility made welcoming athletes so much easier. The collaboration between Boardwalk Mall and IRONMAN South Africa is the best of both worlds. We look forward to the 2023 IRONMAN African Championship, when we can showcase the completed Boardwalk Mall to athletes.
